On the heels of various state and local teachers unions across our nation taking to their respected state capitals, NEA of Southern Nevada will be rallying at the Grant Sawyer State Building in coordination with Washoe Education Association at the Nevada State Legislature Building on Monday 2/18.
In collaboration with the #HitTheStripforPublicEd organizers, ESEA, NSEA, and other grassroots efforts, we invite all educators, education support professionals, school administrators, students, parents, and community members to rally for our students. Our district is in a dire state and the currently outdated 1967 Nevada Plan is barely ensuring we are giving our students their right to a free, quality education. Couple this with the promised funds from the hotel room taxes (IP1) and the recreational marijuana taxes, our students have been consistently put on the back burner for decades.
We have many schools that utilize outdated resources, crumbling buildings that have malfunctioning plumbing and mold, overcrowded classrooms with more students than desks, and classrooms without highly qualified teachers. We need every single stakeholder of public education to come down and rally with us!
Why this day? School employees will have this day off. While it is definitely a well-deserved three-day weekend for all school employees, without your voices sharing your stories of how more funding can help our students, the continued creation of bills and dissection of public education will be done without the consultation of those who are in the classroom: educators, educational support professionals, administrators, and students.
Isn't it time for our students to be first on the agenda in this state? Isn't it time that legislators hear why it is important to fund education adequately in Nevada?
We do!
We will be rallying in front of the Grand Sawyer State Building on Monday 2/18. The rally will take place 11 AM - 1 PM. We urge everyone to not only rally with us, but also stay for the Senate Committee on Education meeting which will start at 1:30 PM that day.
We hope to see you there! Please share our flyer and, if you can spare, a case of bottled water with you.
